This summer, from June 29 to July 5, our students represented the department and the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute at the 38th ECMI Modelling Week. The trip to Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania was made possible thanks to our department’s longstanding involvement in the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) and the consortium’s steadfast support of Ukraine. We are proud that our department ensures KPI’s status as the only representative of Ukraine in this respected European organization.

This year, the honor of representing the university went to five third-year students: Kateryna Tsaruk, Olha Maliar, Valeriia Baranivska, Nataliia Amons, and Kamila Bryl.

The event brought together students from across Europe to work on real-world problems proposed by experts from academia and industry. Each of our students joined an international team to tackle a unique project.

Valeriia shared her experience of the event:

“The work was intense but incredibly exciting. All discussions were held in English in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We not only proposed our own ideas and shared results but also learned to collaborate in teams where everyone contributed to solving the problem. Each of us was placed in a different team, as this year the organizers required teams to be formed by lottery to ensure diversity among universities:

Kateryna worked on the problem of strategic Wi-Fi router placement under the supervision of Kacper Taźbierski from the Department of Mathematics at Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Poland)

Olha investigated the timing and volume of investments in green energy with Professor Cláudia Nunes from the Department of Mathematics at Técnico Lisboa – University of Lisbon (Portugal)

I tackled the project “Climate in the Light of Mathematical Equations” (forecasting physical phenomena influencing climate change) under the guidance of Davor Kumozec from the Department of Mathematics and Informatics at the University of Novi Sad (Serbia)

Nataliia contributed to the improvement of predictive models of blood flow in viscoelastic vessels, supervised by Srđan Lazendić from the Department of Electronics and Information Systems at Ghent University (Belgium)

Kamila worked on the problem of group testing in large populations with Professor Adérito Araújo from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Coimbra (Portugal)

This experience inspired us to aim higher, and we returned home not only with new knowledge but also with renewed faith in the power of the international scientific community. We are sincerely grateful for this unforgettable journey!

The achievements of our students are vivid proof that the Ukrainian school of mathematics is competitive at the global level. We are proud of their determination, curiosity, and high level of professional training. Participation in such events enriches practical experience, strengthens international ties, and opens new horizons for future careers.
